This month’s column was hard – because there are so many flying games on the Internet! Here are ten (plus one) that are a bit different.
Small but important print: All games are free downloads or free to view online, and need the minimum of equipment. Some games require your browser to have a 'plug in' for Shockwave, Flash or Java.
To play a game, simply click on its name. If you are a parent, we advise you to try the game and the site it's on first before letting your kids play them, to make sure you're happy. When downloading games from the Internet, don't forget to keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware software up to date.
Birds
Fly Like a Bird
Use the arrow keys to direct your bird. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the bag of chips, and then use the Ctrl key to poo (sorry) on the traffic wardens. Crashing loses lives, and if you end up on the ground, use the down arrow to take off again.
Flying Bird
A bit manic but pretty simple – use your mouse to move the bird up and down the screen. The aim is to eat fruit and avoid missiles (a good premise for life). Various cartoon characters will do their best to make life hard for you, and the music is a bit headache-inducing. Totally addictive!
Learn To Fly
A penguin learns on a website that he can’t fly – so he decides to prove everyone wrong. Use the left and right arrow keys to control flight, and try to bounce on the water. Building up research funds mean that you can change air resistance, ramp height and speed, and even buy a glider or a rocket. Oh good grief, how much time have I spent playing this…
Animals
Panda Star
Use the left and right arrow to guide the panda around the stars, and use the space star for a bit of a boost. Strangely soothing.
Flying Cat
Click the mouse to make the cat jump and start catching stars. Each star bounces the cat higher, and moving the mouse moves the cat across the screen. If the cat falls too far the game is over.
Transmigration
You are a dragon, a bird, a cat, a human, a fish, a shark – fly (or run or swim) through some dramatic worlds shooting things with the space bar. Not a lot to it but it looks good.
Battle of the Worms
Another dragon game – fly your dragon to rescue villagers and put them on platforms. Look out for health and invincibility icons, and shoot worms using your space bar. Arrow keys move you around.
Insects
Catch the Insects
Catch the flying insects (and the spiders) by clicking on them – harder than it looks!
Dr Zitbag’s Invent an Insect game
Use your mouse to move Dr Zitbag around, click and hold to make him crouch and then let him go to catch a flying insect.
Bumble
Help the bee to pollinate the flowers that are the same colour. Pick up the honey and avoid the insects and spiders. Hold the left mouse button down to climb, and let it go to fall. The most annoying music yet!
And as an extra:
Paperplane Madness
Fly your plane, dodging birds, hills and storms, and collect blue things that give you more power. Hold the left mouse button down to climb, and let it go to fall. It’s fast, difficult (well, I thought it was) and loud, but the best music so far.
